ASA Certification and Membership

The American Sailing Association is the world’s foremost organization dedicated to training, teaching and certifying schools, sailing instructors and sailing enthusiasts. When you join the American Sailing Association, or work with an ASA certified sailing school, you learn how to sail from professionals to get the most rigorous, safety-first education and the best sailing instruction available.

NJ Sailing School is an American Sailing Association (ASA) certified facility offering a wide range of ASA courses. In addition to the ASA course offerings, we also offer our Basic Sailing course that are not ASA certification course but offers the same high standards with the ASA certification as a test out option.

 

 

Basic Sailing (ASA 101 Test-Out option)
Basic Sailing Pearson

No experience? No problem. This is the course for you. This comprehensive beginners course is offered with two full days of instruction by one of our experienced and professional Captains. Upon completion, we offer Mentor Sails and Rentals on one of our practice boats to perfect you new skills. In this course you will get hands-on experience in the fundamentals of safety, sail handling, sailing upwind and down, man overboard, anchoring, docking and undocking.

Coastal Cruising (ASA 103)

For the Basic Sailing (101) graduate or the sailor with limited experience looking to move up to larger boats or just increase their sailing knowledge, this is the course for you. This two-day course is conducted on a larger in-board engine vessel and takes in your Basic sailing skills and expands your experience with a trip on the Intercoastal Waterway. You will experience basic navigation, radio operations, bridge openings and passage, and potential ocean sailing.

Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104)

Considering an extended sail or charter? This is the course for you. This two and a half day live-a-board course covers the skills needed to skipper or crew a 30 to 40 foot auxiliary sailboat by day or night in coastal waters. Boat systems and maintenance will be covered as well as provision planning, trip planning and emergency procedures.

 

This is a two and a half day course starting on Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. It is a two night stay aboard experience. Provisions are provided and only a sleeping bag of blanket is required.

Coastal Navigation (ASA 105)

Be a navigator, not a “naviguesser”. The Coastal Navigation class is designed to provide you with working knowledge of basic to advanced piloting techniques. You will learn plotting methods, position fixing, associated publications, aids to navigation, weather, navigator’s routines and planning. This two and one half day classroom course covers navigational theory required to safely navigate a boat in coastal or inland waters. No previous certification is needed.

Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106)

This live-a-board course covers the skills needed to skipper or crew a 35 to 45 foot auxiliary sailboat, day or night, in coastal waters, in any weather. This is the most spectacular buy in sail instruction available today. It will be a rigorous and comprehensive sailing experience that can turn the novice into a seasoned charterer and give the more advanced charterer an experience one would be hard pressed to find elsewhere.

Radar Endorsement (ASA 120)

The ASA radar course teaches safe, efficient use of small-craft radar for piloting, chart navigation, and collision avoidance, including radar principles and practical matters of radar operation. A realistic PC based radar simulator is used in the course to illustrate radar measurements.. All necessary plotting tools and books are included. Call or email for details.

ASA 101 & 103

Combine Basic Sailing and Basic Cruising for four days of comprehensive instruction and savings. With the Open Dates option, you select you course dates
